The Broadway Rose Theatre (BRTC) seeks a full-time Technical Director (TD) to join their team in Tigard, Oregon. Broadway Rose is a professional musical theater company performing in Oregon for 32 years. The TD has the overall responsibility for the technical needs of the production and the technical equipment in two separate locations. Each year BRTC produces four mainstage shows in their New Stage 270-seat proscenium house and two blockbuster summer musicals in the 600-seat Deb Fennell Auditorium, located next to Tigard High School, which has a fly system and large orchestra pit.
Basic Requirements:
The TD must have a solid understanding of all technical aspects of production, including lighting equipment and processes, sound equipment and processes, scenery construction, rigging and the structure of a theatrical running crew.
Duties include but not limited to:
1. Serve as TD for all 6 BRTC mainstage productions. Lead all aspects of planning, scheduling, building, load-in, technical rehearsals, and strike for all productions and events in the season.
2. Create drafts and construction drawings in a CAD program of all designs for productions to be built. TD must have an understanding of AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks.
3. Supervise Assistant Technical Director (ATD), ATD will oversee paid student interns, and part time employees.
4. Oversee the ongoing maintenance of theatre facility, including all theatrical rigging, scenic shop construction equipment, lighting instruments, lighting computer console and electrical components.
5. Order construction materials.
6. Maintain facility to abide by Safety and Fire regulations.
7. Stay abreast of industry trends, including ongoing research into new advances in theatrical technical equipment.
8. Secure prices for bidding, review bids, and oversee installation of projects when new equipment is being installed.
9. When appropriate, make budgeting recommendations and oversee set and lighting portion of production budgets.
10. Create & maintain a safe, clean workplace in all production areas.
11. Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
1. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Knowledge of standard technical theater and safety practices. Skill in use of computers.
2. Knowledge of scene shop operations to include use of multiple power tools.
3. The TD is directly responsible to the Production Manager; however, it is assumed the TD will function independently, performing his/her job based on the needs of the production, and information gathered at production meetings and rehearsals.
Tech Week:
The TD is expected to attend all tech week rehearsals. The TD will be available to immediately make small adjustments or repairs during the rehearsals. The TD will take note of changes needed so that he/she can execute them according to the priority given by the Production Manager in a timely manner. The TD will also note which items will be asked of the set builder to accomplish. The TD will also assist with Lights and Sound as necessary and to help problem-solve all technical aspects.
Skills and Training:
• MFA in a technical theatre discipline, or BA/BFA in Theatre, or comparable professional experience in technical theatre production.
• Three or more years of progressive professional technical theater production experience preferred with understanding of industry standards.
• Drafting experience (AutoCad/Vectorworks/Sketchup) required.
• Able to work as a team member and maintain a positive attitude.
• Valid driver’s license.
Annual Compensation:
60K, Health Insurance & dental & vision, paid time off
