AUDITION NOTICE
Crave Theatre Company is accepting video auditions from actors/performers for four roles in our Spring show ASHLAND by playwright Isabel Estelle from now until 11:59pm on Monday, February 5th, 2024.
This Portland premiere will be directed by Jennifer Lanier and assistant directed by Juliet Mylan.
Character Descriptions
Please note that these are open auditions. All gender identities, races/ethnicities are welcome and encouraged to audition. Due to the subject matter, we are requiring that all performers be over 18 years of age.
VIM: She/her. Late twenties to early thirties, several years past completing her PhD, youngest child.
WES: She/her or they/them. Late twenties to early thirties, Vim’s partner, a chainsaw crew boss, never attended college.
EMILY: She/her. Early to mid-thirties, Vim’s sister, a nurse, eldest child.
SEBASTIAN: He/him. Late twenties to early thirties, Vim’s brother, a PhD candidate, middle child.
SUSAN: She/her. Middle-aged to older woman, volunteer with Compassion and Choices.
Ashland is a story about end-of-life choices, queer identity, and hope in the face of adversity. The tone we would most like to capture from auditions is the humor and hope that underlies the play.
Show Description
After a young woman is unexpectedly diagnosed with a terminal illness and chooses to pursue Death with Dignity, she and her new partner must navigate the beginning and end of their relationship simultaneously. As the young woman’s health rapidly declines, her partner and her two siblings grapple with the absurdity and hilarity of death, what it means to be family, and what it takes to let go.

Initial auditions will be held virtually: self-taped submissions accepted through February 5th, 2024.

An in-person callback will be held the weekend of February 10th & 11th in the Portland metro area. Times and location TBD.

Pay
Each performer is guaranteed a minimum stipend of $2,000 for this production. Half will be paid on opening night and half will be paid on closing.

Please film a self-tape including a 1-2 minute contemporary comedic monologue, as well as a 1-2 minute personal story/discussion exploring what the summer of 2020 was like for you in the face of natural disasters and a pandemic.
