A master class on choreographing movement for performance. This workshop is for actors, directors, dancers, and choreographers of all levels and ages!
Sunday, May 19th from 10am-12pm at Portland Center Stage (mezzanine)
A hands on workshop in creating ensemble based, human behavior-rich action on stage, that might be very theatrical dance, or very dance-y theater. Anywhere from a lifetime of dance experience to no dance experience required, and a very expansive view of what Dance can be encouraged. Strategies from Dan’s choreographic techniques will serve as launching points, with the goal of branching off and developing YOUR unique voice as a creator. Please come dressed to move and prepare to sweat a bit.
About the instructor:
Dan Safer has choreographed and directed all over the place, from the back rooms of bars in NYC to Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris to a giant leaky warehouse at a dance festival in Poland where a light fell off the grid halfway thru a show and almost killed him. His work has been at La Mama, BAM, Dance Theater Workshop, Danspace, Les Subsistances (Lyon, France), and many other places. He got kicked out of high school for a year, used to be a go-go dancer, was a member of Anohni’s Blacklips Performance Cult in the 1990s, and once choreographed the Queen of Thailand’s Birthday Party. Dan taught at NYU for a long time and is now a Senior Lecturer and Director of Dance Programs at MIT’s Theater department. He is the head of Witness Relocation.
