PCC Sylvania Performing Arts Center – SCENE SHOP SUPERVISOR
The PCC Sylvania Performing Arts Center and Theatre Arts program provide students with opportunities for growth in the art of theatre, a sense of community and cultural enrichment and for some a working wage. The Performing Arts Center serves the Portland community as a center for meetings, events and performances. The Shop Supervisor supports and advances this mission.
Nature and scope of work:
The Shop Supervisor manages and maintains the Sylvania PAC Scene Shop as a working teaching and construction facility serving PCC students and the wider community:
As a working shop for PCC Theatre Arts productions’ scenery construction, painting and rigging
As a teaching facility for where students can discover and learn and apply theatrical skills
As the support facility for PAC rentals
The Shop Supervisor establishes and maintains a shop environment that encourages student participation and provides opportunities for exploration and growth. They are responsible for posting and maintaining a regular shop schedule. They monitor and report student shop work hours (assigned as part of Theatre Arts classes and productions).
The Shop Supervisor is responsible for the organization and execution of all production scenery and prop construction as assigned by the PCC Technical Director. They oversee students and other workers in carpentry, metalwork, prop making, painting and other scenic craft exercises assigned as part of classes and Theatre Arts productions.
The Shop Supervisor advises the Technical director and PAC Rental Coordinator on scenic materials and shop supply purchases and maintenance of shop tools and equipment
The Shop Supervisor manages and maintains inventory and storage of stock scenic and prop elements.
The Shop Supervisor establishes and enforces industry and OSHA standards for safety and working conditions and maintains the shop and storage spaces as safe, orderly workspaces. They maintain a binder of Material Safety Data Sheets for all applicable current shop materials.
Knowledge, skills, abilities and experience:
Knowledge of OSHA and other federal, state and local regulations as they relate to theatre practice. Knowledge of safe procedures for construction and installation of theatrical scenery
Advanced practical knowledge, skills and experience in stage carpentry, metalwork (welding, fabrication), painting and rigging
Leadership experience in a scene shop
Sense of humor
Skills in supervising, training and overseeing students and staff
Knowledge of technical theatrical equipment, construction practices and workflow
Reading scaled technical drawings
Maintenance, alignment and sharpening of hand and power tools for wood and metal
Steel welding skills
Ability to lift 50 pounds
Ability to work with an ethnically and culturally diverse population
Ability to supervise workers with varied skill sets, including the developmentally delayed
Ability to work a varied schedule
Skill in technical theatre instruction preferred
Theatrical drafting skills – especially CAD – preferred
Position employment dates are approximately June 26, 2023 – June 17, 2024. Schedule is varied based on production calendar, but is approximately 20 hours per week. Rate of pay is currently set at $20/hr.
