—–

A hands-on monologue workshop designed specifically for those from marginalized communities and dedicated to expansive discovery and interpretation within the text.

Instructors will work with you to choose a monologue which resonates with you, find textual support for your experiences within the character, and start preparing the piece to be audition-ready. This workshop includes text and rhythm work, character exploration, and hands-on direction and notes from Speculative Drama’s Creative and Artistic Directors.

Please bring a copy of Shakespeare’s Complete Works if you have one (no-one turned away, copies can be provided). If you have a monologue or character in mind that is great, but not in any way necessary! All levels welcome, professionals and newcomers to Shakespeare alike.

Content Note: Participant’s personal experiences as a marginalized gender, race, sexuality or experiences with poverty, disability, mental health, or neurodivergence may be discussed in class and depth of discussion is at each participant’s discretion.

About the instructors:

Megan Skye Hale (she/her) is a classically trained actor (LAMDA), movement director, and teacher whose interests include movement and site-specific theatre, and how those intersect with classic stories. Megan is a graduate of the London Academy for Music and Dramatic Arts classical acting program where she studied classical acting, physical theatre, mask, and Lecoq style clowning.

Myrrh Larsen (they/them) is a non-binary Asian American Shakespearean director with a focus on textual analysis and rhythm. Their most recent productions include Titus Andronicus and an all sapphic Comedy of Errors which forefronted queer, asexual, and gender-nonconforming characters, showcasing the potential for diversity in Shakespeare through race and gender conscious casting.

Speculative Drama has spent the last 7 years reclaiming the relevance of myths, fairy tales, and classical texts through immersive, live theatrical performances. Our goal is to better reflect the diversity of the communities which we serve, and to show fellow people of marginalized identities that we, too, have a place in the classics. Combining the principles of movement theatre, immersive staging, and site-specific production, we create an atmosphere of inclusion and innovation while honoring and maintaining the original texts or source materials.

Class size is limited to 10 people, with a minimum enrollment of 5. Students will be notified at least 24 hours in advance if class is cancelled due to low enrollment.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations made 7 days prior to the start of class will receive a full refund. After that period, full or partial refunds will be at the discretion of PATA.
